The Three Types of Connection in Human Design ❤️
On this Valentine’s Day, let’s talk about connections—not just romantic ones, but all the ways we energetically interact with the people in our lives.
In Human Design, when two charts come together, they create a unique energetic dynamic. These connections shape how we experience relationships, whether with partners, family, friends, or even coworkers. Here are the three main types of connections and how they show up:
💛 Dominance Connections
One person has a full channel, and the other person has neither gate. In this dynamic, the person with the channel provides a consistent energy that the other person experiences only when they’re around them.
✨ Strength: The person with the channel is a steady, reliable source of that energy.
✨ Challenge: The person without the channel may feel dependent on their partner for that energy.
✨ Example: If one person has the Channel of Struggle (28-38) and the other does not, the person with the channel will always bring that warrior-like energy into the relationship, while the other may not fully relate to it.
⚡ Electromagnetic Connections
Each person has one-half of a channel, and when they come together, the full channel is created. This is often what creates chemistry—a magnetic attraction that pulls two people toward each other.
✨ Strength: This connection creates something new that neither person has alone.
✨ Challenge: It can feel like a push-pull dynamic—one moment, deeply drawn to each other, and the next, feeling overwhelmed.
✨ Example: One person has Gate 59 (intimacy) and the other has Gate 6 (emotional openness). Together, they create the Channel of Mating, which brings a strong attraction, but also the potential for emotional intensity.
⚖️ Compromise Connections
One person has the full channel, while the other person has only one of the gates in that channel. This can create power struggles, where the person with just one gate feels like they are constantly adjusting to the person with the full channel.
✨ Strength: The person with the gate is open to learning from the person with the channel.
✨ Challenge: The person with the full channel may feel set in their ways, making it harder for the other person to contribute.
✨ Example: If one person has the Channel of Structuring (43-23) (a strong opinionated voice), and the other person has only Gate 43, the person with the gate might feel unheard or like their ideas don’t get fully recognized.
Celebrating Our Connections ❤️
None of these dynamics are good or bad—they simply show how our energy interacts with others. Understanding these connections can help us appreciate the unique ways we complement, challenge, and inspire each other.
